There’s a common misconception about Freemasonry. That it exists behind closed doors, concerned only with its own members and traditions. Walk into any meeting of Lodge 281 St Johnston, however, and you’ll quickly find a very different story.
Freemasonry, at its heart, has always been about making good men better and making the communities around them better too. Public events and charitable giving are not add-ons to what we do. They are a direct expression of it.
Charity Is a Core Masonic Value
The three great principles of Freemasonry are Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth. Relief, meaning the relief of distress and the support of those in need, has been central to Masonic practice for centuries.
Under the Grand Lodge of Ireland, lodges across the island have a long and proud tradition of giving back to the communities in which they meet. Lodge 281 is no different. Whether supporting local causes in St Johnston and the wider Donegal and Londonderry area, or contributing to national Masonic charitable funds, our members give their time and money because it matters. Not for recognition, but because it is the right thing to do.
Why Public Events?
Lodge meetings themselves are private, but our charitable work belongs to the wider community. Public events give us the opportunity to do three important things.
Connect with the community. We are your neighbours, your colleagues, your friends. Public events let us be visible and approachable, and help break down the myths that sometimes surround Freemasonry.
Raise vital funds. Charity raffles, social evenings, and community fundraisers allow us to direct meaningful support to causes that matter locally, whether that is helping families in hardship, supporting children’s services, or responding to urgent local need.
Celebrate good fellowship. Freemasonry values friendship and community. Our public events are a genuine expression of that, a chance to share good company with people beyond the lodge room.
Who Benefits?
Over the years, Lodge 281 and its brethren have supported a wide range of causes including local hospices, children’s charities, community initiatives, and individuals facing difficult circumstances. The Masonic Benevolent Fund of the Grand Lodge of Ireland also provides support to Masons, their widows, and dependants who find themselves in need.
When you attend one of our events or support our fundraising, you are contributing to something that has a real and lasting impact on real people’s lives.
