Progress Updates: Extension Work Continues and Hogg Roast Sells Out!

It’s been an exciting few weeks here at St Johnston 281, and we’re delighted to share some wonderful updates on both our building developments and upcoming social events.

Extension Work Gathering Momentum

Since our last update on 19th July, when we reported the official commencement of work on our Lodge and Chapter Room extension, progress has continued at an impressive pace. We’re particularly pleased to announce that our electrician, Chris Hepburn, completed his first fix work today – a significant milestone that brings us another step closer to completion.

This steady progress reflects the careful planning and coordination that has characterised this project from the outset. Each phase builds upon the last, and seeing the electrical infrastructure taking shape gives us all a tangible sense of how our vision is becoming reality.

A Fantastic New Patio Facility

But the extension isn’t the only exciting development at our Masonic complex. We want to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Terrence, Craig, Andy, and Johnny, whose dedication has extended far beyond the Lodge and Chapter Room work. These hardworking brethren have been putting the finishing touches to our patio area, creating something truly special for our lodge community. Lodge update

As the accompanying photographs demonstrate, they’ve constructed a fantastic new sheltered space specifically designed to house our BBQ, Hogg Roaster, and any other culinary equipment we might need for outdoor events. This weatherproof facility means we can finally say goodbye to those anxious moments of watching the sky and hoping for fair weather when planning our outdoor functions.

The practical benefits of this new space cannot be overstated. No longer will our social events be at the mercy of Ulster’s famously unpredictable weather. Instead, we have a proper, dedicated area that will serve our community for years to come. Well done, gentlemen – your efforts are deeply appreciated and will benefit us all immensely.

Hogg Roast Evening: A Phenomenal Response

Speaking of our social events, we have some truly brilliant news to share about our Annual Hogg Roast Evening, scheduled for Friday, 5th September 2025. In what can only be described as a phenomenal response, all 80 tickets have been snapped up – and we still have more than a month to go!

This overwhelming enthusiasm speaks volumes, not only about the popularity of this much-loved annual tradition but also about the exceptional organisational skills and hard work of our Hall Committee. Their efforts in planning and promoting this event have clearly struck a chord with our community.

For those brethren and companions who may have missed out on securing tickets, please don’t despair. We’re starting a reserve list for anyone who would still like to attend. Simply get in touch with our Hall Management Committee Chairman, and we’ll note your name and the number of tickets you require. Should any become available, we’ll contact you on a first-come, first-served basis.

A Testament to Community Spirit

This remarkable response to our Hogg Roast Evening demonstrates two important things: firstly, the wisdom of booking early for popular events, and secondly, the incredible strength of our shared community spirit here at St Johnston 281. When 80 tickets disappear so quickly, it’s clear evidence of the strong bonds that unite our lodge family.

The combination of our building developments and the enthusiasm for our social calendar paints a picture of a lodge that’s not just maintaining its traditions but actively building for the future. From the practical improvements to our facilities to the overwhelming support for our social events, everything points to a community that’s thriving and growing stronger.

Looking Ahead

As we continue to monitor progress on our extension work and prepare for what promises to be another memorable Hogg Roast Evening, we’re reminded of the importance of the work we do together – whether it’s the physical labour of improving our building or the social bonds we strengthen through shared meals and fellowship.

Thank you, brethren and companions, for your continued support in all these endeavours. Your enthusiasm, whether for wielding tools or purchasing tickets, is what makes St Johnston 281 the special place it is.

If you have any questions about the extension work, would like to join the reserve list for the Hogg Roast, or need more information about any of our ongoing projects, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with the Hall Management Committee.

Here’s to continued progress, both in our building work and in the strength of our brotherhood.
