A Gathering of Brethren
Lodge 281 St Johnston witnessed a truly remarkable evening of Masonic tradition and brotherhood as over 80 Brethren gathered for the Installation Supper and Communication honouring Worshipful Brother Nigel Buchanan W.M. The exceptional turnout demonstrated not only the strength of our Lodge but also the deep bonds of fellowship that unite our members across County Donegal and beyond.
The atmosphere throughout the evening was one of warmth, dignity, and mutual respect—hallmarks of our Lodge that have been carefully cultivated over generations. From the moment Brethren began to arrive, there was a palpable sense of anticipation for the ceremonies and celebrations that lay ahead.
The Installation Supper
An Evening of Hospitality
The evening commenced with an Installation Supper that exemplified the very best of Lodge 281’s hospitality. Our ever-faithful Ladies of St Johnston once again demonstrated why they are so deeply appreciated by our membership, preparing and serving a festive board that was both abundant and expertly presented.
The quality of the catering has become something of a Lodge tradition in itself, with the Ladies consistently rising to the occasion for our most important gatherings. Their attention to detail, from the table settings to the final cup of tea, creates an environment where Brethren can relax and enjoy genuine fellowship before the more formal proceedings commence.
The Importance of the Festive Board
In Freemasonry, the festive board serves a purpose far beyond simple sustenance. It provides an opportunity for Brethren to gather in an informal setting, to renew friendships, to welcome visiting members from other Lodges, and to strengthen the bonds that make our Craft so enduring. Last night’s supper fulfilled this role admirably, with conversations flowing freely and the warmth of brotherhood evident at every table.
The Formal Toast List
Toasts to Grand Lodge and Provincial Grand Lodge
Following the meal, the formal Toast List was conducted with the dignity and precision that befits such an important occasion. Worshipful Brother Nigel Buchanan, as Worshipful Master, proposed the opening toast to Ireland, followed by his toast to The Most Worshipful the Grand Lodge of Ireland—the governing body of Freemasonry under the Irish Constitution.
Brother Richard Brown, Senior Warden, then rose to propose the toast to The Right Worshipful Provincial Grand Master & Officers of The Right Worshipful Provincial Grand Lodge of Londonderry & Donegal & other Provincial Grand Lodges in attendance. This toast acknowledged the distinguished visitors present and recognised the vital role that Provincial Grand Lodge plays in supporting and guiding individual Lodges throughout the province.
Right Worshipful Brother Robert Mitchell P.D.G.M. offered a gracious reply on behalf of Provincial Grand Lodge, his words reflecting both the esteem in which Lodge 281 is held and the continuing strength of Freemasonry in our region.
The Presentation of the P.M.’s Jewel
One of the evening’s most significant moments came with the presentation of the Past Master’s Jewel to the Worshipful Master. Very Worshipful Brother Sam Waterworth, Lodge Secretary, proposed this toast with words that captured both the achievements of the year past and the lasting contribution that Worshipful Brother Buchanan has made to the Lodge.
The P.M.’s Jewel is more than mere decoration—it represents a year of dedicated service, countless hours of preparation, and the responsibility of guiding the Lodge through its ceremonies and business. Worshipful Brother Nigel Buchanan’s reply was characteristically humble, acknowledging the support he has received from officers and members alike.
Supporting Our Charitable Work
Worshipful Brother Terence Milligan, Steward of Charities, proposed the toast to The Masonic Charities, reminding all present of Freemasonry’s proud tradition of charitable giving. The response from the Brethren at table was generous, reflecting Lodge 281’s ongoing commitment to supporting those in need both within and beyond the Masonic family.
Honouring Guests and Ladies
Very Worshipful Brother Sam Waterworth then proposed the toast to Our Guests, warmly welcoming the visiting Brethren who had travelled to share in our celebrations. Worshipful Brother Robin McCallan, Past Master of Lodge 547, offered a gracious reply, his words reinforcing the bonds of friendship that exist between Lodges throughout the Irish Constitution.
Worshipful Brother Philip Robinson, Past Master, proposed the toast to The Ladies of St Johnston, expressing the gratitude of all Brethren for the exceptional hospitality and support provided throughout the evening and indeed throughout the year. Their contribution to Lodge 281 cannot be overstated—they are truly the foundation upon which so much of our success is built.
Remembering Absent Friends
Worshipful Brother Marshall Robinson, Director of Ceremonies, concluded the formal toasts with a touching tribute to Absent Friends. This moment of reflection reminded all present of those Brethren who, through illness, distance, or having passed to the Grand Lodge Above, could not share in the evening’s celebrations. It was a poignant reminder that our Lodge’s history is shaped by all who have gone before us.
The Installation of Officers
Adjourning to Labour
Following the festive board, Brethren made their way to the Lodge Room for the Installation of Officers. The transition from the informal atmosphere of the supper to the solemnity of the Lodge Room was marked, as always, by the quiet dignity that characterises our ceremonial work.
The Installation ceremony proceeded with precision and reverence, demonstrating the care with which Lodge 281 approaches its ritual work. The ceremony saw the majority of officers continuing in their positions—a testament both to their dedication throughout the previous year and to the confidence that the membership places in their ongoing leadership.
Continuity and Tradition
The decision to retain most officers in their current roles reflects the stability and strength of Lodge 281’s officer line. Each officer has demonstrated their commitment to the Lodge and their proficiency in their respective duties. This continuity ensures that the high standards of ceremonial work and Lodge administration that our members have come to expect will continue throughout the coming year.
Retiring to Labour
As the Installation ceremony concluded and Brethren prepared to retire to Labour, there was a collective sense of satisfaction at an evening exceptionally well spent. The combination of excellent hospitality, meaningful ritual, and genuine fellowship had created an occasion that will be remembered fondly by all who attended.
Acknowledgements and Thanks
Our sincere thanks go to all who contributed to making this evening such a success. To the Ladies of St Johnston, whose culinary skills and warm hospitality set the perfect tone for the evening. To all the officers who ensured the smooth running of both the festive board and the Installation ceremony. To the visiting Brethren whose presence honoured us. And to every member of Lodge 281 who attended and contributed to the spirit of brotherhood that made this such a memorable occasion.
As we look ahead to the coming year under the continued guidance of our installed officers, we do so with confidence and optimism, knowing that Lodge 281 St Johnston remains strong, vibrant, and true to the principles that have guided us through our history.
